An API Key is a unique identifier that authenticates requests associated with your account.
You need an API Key to connect your account to the Bitfinex mobile app and to use Bitfinex's authenticated API endpoints.
To create an API Key:
Step 1: Visit your API Key creation page
Go to the API section of your account, and choose the Create New Key tab.
Step 2: Choose the preferred configuration
Carefully select the permissions you would like your API Key to have for your:
- Account Information
- Account History
- Orders
- Margin trading
- Margin funding
- Wallets
- Withdrawals.
A default configuration would already be available on your screen.
At the bottom of the page, as an optional feature, you can label your API Key to easily identify it after its creation.
After you have completed the steps above, confirm your configuration settings by clicking the Generate API Key button.
Step 3: Confirm the API Key creation
As a security measure, a modal will open asking for your 2FA code (or U2F device, depending on your security setup) and once successfully entered, you will receive an email with a confirmation link. Click the Create API Key button as seen on the image below to complete the process.
Please make sure to access the email confirmation using the same browser as your Bitfinex page. If clicking the link takes you to the wrong browser, please copy and paste the link to the browser you are using.
Step 4: Save your API Key
Your API key has been generated and the page will display both your API Key and API Key secret in text and as a QR code.
At this time you can either scan the code or copy and paste the text for your need.
When you initially create an API Key, you have a limited opportunity to record the key when it is presented to you at the time of its creation.
For security reasons do not store your API key online, or in a cloud, as it could be compromised.
Once finished, you will find your API Key in your API section under My API Keys where you can only edit or revoke permissions.
To revoke or edit an existing API Key:
If you did not record the key or if you have lost it, you can revoke the key by visiting the My API Keys tab on your API page.
Under Action you can select Revoke.
This will automatically rescind all permissions which were being used by our API key.
If you would like to edit the permissions, select the Permissions tab and click the edit lock mark to proceed. Once you have made the changes, select Update Permissions at the bottom of the page.
For security reasons, you will be asked for your 2FA code to finalise the edit.
