An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is a type of financing using cryptocurrencies to create a new coin, application, or service. Interested investors can participate in the offering in exchange for a new cryptocurrency token issued by the company.
When participating in ICOs, you should never use a wallet linked to an exchange or any other service where you do not have access to the private keys of the sending address. You should use a dedicated, local wallet in which you have the private keys to the addresses.
Important: If you use an exchange-linked wallet, you risk losing your funds because the returned tokens will be delivered to the exchange's hot wallet rather than to your specific deposit address with that exchange. This is true for Bitfinex as well as the majority of other exchanges.
