What is a Static IP address?
A static IP address means that the IP address assigned to your internet connection never changes. The local IP address that your home router assigns to you is not the same as your public address. Most internet service providers give you a dynamic public IP address.
To ensure a static IP address, you will most likely require a VPN with a dedicated IP address. While using a regular internet provider, there is no guarantee that your IP address won’t change.
How to make use of a static IP address with Bitfinex?
With a static IP address, you can make use of various security features at Bitfinex.
These include settings you can find in your Account > Security > Session:
- Detect IP Address Change: If the IP address used to access your account changes, all of your logged-in sessions will be immediately logged out, thereby preventing any session hijacking and protecting your account.
- IP Address Whitelist: This enables you to limit account access to your static IP address. For more information, please view: How to whitelist an IP address at Bitfinex?
You can also make use of your static IP address in your security withdrawal settings, found in Account > Security > Withdrawal Settings:
- Monitor Withdrawals by IP: If a withdrawal is made from an unrecognized IP address that has not logged into your account before, you will receive an email to your Bitfinex linked email account asking you to check and verify the withdrawal.
- Lock withdrawals for 24 hours when a new IP address is used: Having this function enabled and logging into your account from a different IP address (usually a non-static/dynamic IP address), your account will be put on withdrawal hold for 24 hours. This is a common reason for withdrawal holds.
What is a Dynamic IP address?
A dynamic IP address is a temporary IP address assigned to a computing device or node when connected to a network. A dynamic IP address is temporary and automatically configured. The vast majority of IP addresses are dynamic and may result in you losing access to your account when whitelisting your IP address.
When using a dynamic IP address, please be sure you are aware of the security risks it may put your account in. We recommend using a static IP address when possible.
