Authentication is the method of verifying the identity of a user, process, or device, which is a requirement to allow access.
Google Authenticator, which we use at Bitfinex, adds a second level of security between an attacker and withdrawal confirmations, password changes, API key creation, and logins by using a Time-based One-time Password Algorithm (TOTP) and HMAC-based One-time Password Algorithm (HOTP) for authenticating users.
If you need to change your 2FA device, please follow the instructions below.
Note: The instructions below work only if you still have access to your old device with the installed Google Authenticator app.
Important: Requesting a 2FA reset will put your account on a five-day withdrawal hold. For more information, please view Why do I have a withdrawal hold at Bitfinex.
If you have lost your phone or lost access to your Google Authenticator account, please learn How to reset a 2FA at Bitfinex.
How to transfer a Google Authenticator app to a new device
1. Firstly, log in to your Bitfinex account and go to the Security section. Then, choose the Two-factor Authentication settings on your account and press Disable.
2. Using your old device, enter the 2FA code and press Authenticate.
3. You’re almost done! Now, check your email asking you to confirm your action and disable the 2FA. Open it and press Disable token 2FA now.
Important: No changes will be made to your account unless you confirm the email.
4. And, finally, set up 2FA on your Bitfinex account on your new device. You can find a precise guide on how to go about doing this here.
Important: We strongly recommend you go through the steps listed above as soon as possible, minimising the amount of time your account is without 2FA.
If you have lost access to your primary 2FA device or you still have any questions regarding the procedure, please contact Bitfinex Support to have the issue fixed.
